Does a Pool Add Value to a Home?

During the hot days of summer, an inground pool can be something you may wish you had in your backyard!  But is it a feature that will help your home to sell more quickly and for a higher price?

Depending on the size and style of the pool, it could cost $100,000 to install.  There are also the ongoing costs for having the pool professionally opened and closed, the chemicals and equipment to keep the pool heated and clean, along with all the floating toys and patio furniture to kick the enjoyment up a notch!

Not all buyers want pools.  For those who do not, a home with a pool may be one to avoid considering, or one that they may be neutral about, i.e., not attribute any value to the pool itself.

A buyer seeking a home with a pool would attribute value to it, especially if it is well maintained.  And over the past 18 months of the pandemic while we have been spending more time at home with our activities limited, pools have been in even greater demand!  Upgrading your backyard living space from functional to a “backyard oasis”, has never been so popular!

So, while previous to the pandemic a pool may have added 5-10% to the value of a home, today the addition of the pool could very well add more value than the actual cost to install it!
